The Basic Energy Science to (BEST) St. Thomas Applied Renewable Technologies (START) program is a joint effort between the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory (DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory), the University of St. Thomas (UST) in Minnesota, and the Energetics Technology Center, Inc. (ETC). The primary purpose is to accelerate development of energy technologies in the private sector to meet Army energy technology needs, and commercialization. Selected companies have access to funding, talent, the UST START Center, and consulting. Learn more by contacting beststart@etcmd.com.

The START Center is a collaborative hub where researchers, startups, industries, and government research labs converge to translate fundamental energy research into applied and use-inspired solutions.

The St. Thomas Applied & Renewable Technologies (START) Center provides BEST START companies access to specialized research facilities, equipment, and expertise to advance innovation. The START Center brings together experts from UST’s Engineering Design Clinic, Center for Microgrid Research, Center for Applied AI, and School of Engineering to help with design, validation, prototyping, testing services, and consulting.
